Empowered Wednesday: A.M. Johnson

Welcome Back Bookworms to another Empowered Wednesday! This Creator I've had the pleasure to talk to and help promote her books, so without giving it all away right now, let's get onto this week's feature...

Q: Can you tell our readers about yourself and what you do?
A: My name is Amanda or A.M. Johnson and I’m an author. I write romance and contemporary fiction. I’m also a pediatric psych nurse. I have three kiddos, and am obsessed with hockey #GoStars and apparently my hubby looks like Wolverine….

Q: How did you first get into writing and when did you decide to take the leap and go for it?
A: I’ve always enjoyed writing as a coping mechanism and as a way to express myself. I decided writing was something I could actually do after I read The Bell Jar in high school. Sylvia Plath inspired me to try.

Q: Who or what inspired you to do what you are doing now?
jane austen book GIFA: Sylvia Plath and Jane Austen are two epic heroes of mine.

Q: What would be your ideal working environment?
A: Living in Vermont on a cider farm, writing every day by a lake or in the orchard.

Q: How would you describe your style with writing?
A: I feel like my writing is emotionally and story driven. Real and Raw, and steeped heavily in literary prose.

Q: What is one thing you wish you knew starting out with writing or something you could have told your past self?
A: That marketing is the key to being a success as a self-publisher. I would have saved all my money for advertising.

Q: What do you do in your spare time?
A: I love watching my kids play hockey, or go to a local game. I love to read and hike, and drink fancy beer.

Q: How do you motivate yourself to keep the novel going?
A: I remember that I am me, and that everything else around me is white noise. I tend to compare myself, and self-doubt sinks in. I try to take time every day to recharge, disconnect and remember the voices in my head have a story to tell.

Q: What do you find the most frustrating and/or challenging aspect of writing?
A: Marketing and Networking. It’s so hard to get your name out there and I am not someone who is able to “write to market”. I write what I write and sometimes it might not be popular, or what’s trending. It’s hard because marketing isn’t something that comes natural to me at all, so I feel like I am making smaller steps than I should be. I’m grateful for how far I’ve come. I can’t believe it sometimes!!

Q: How much time do you spend writing and is it a hobby or job?
A: Writing is something I do every day, but it’s for me, not for a career. My “day job” …. I’m a nurse. Writing is more of a hobby, but something I have to do to feel happy as well. I’d love for it to be my main job, but I’m not sure if that will ever be a thing. Bucket list, I’ll be a hard cider maker LOL

Q: Can you name some of your favourite authors and explain why they’re your favourite?
A: I love Amy Harmon, Rainbow Rowell, Sylvia Plath, Austen, Sarina Bowen, Vonnegut, Jessica Park, Sarah J MAAS, Bronte sisters, Rowling the list is long LOL

Q: What would be your go to meal, outing and Starbucks/Tim Horton’s Drink
A: My go to meal would be sushi or tortellini, outing would be Kayak on the lake and then out for drinks at a local pub, fav drink at SB is the London Fog Latte

Q: Kiss, Kill and Marry:
sixteen candles GIFA: Kiss Jess, Kill Uncle Jesse, Marry Jake
here is my version too: Kiss-Tyler Seguin, Kill- Brad Marchand, Marry Ben Bishop

Q: If you were stuck on an Island what would be the three things you would want with you?
A: Him by Sarina Bowen, desalinisation machine, sun screen

Q: What sort of advice can you give to anyone out there that’s thinking about starting a novel?
A: Save all your pennies for marketing and build your newsletter, but most importantly, write what you want to write, Your words are your art, your title and covers are your art, the punk rocker in me says RAGE against the machine LOL…. But just remember who you are and don’t get lost in the noise =)
